Off-Grid Solar Kits – An isolated energy solution

It’s all fine talking about the ideal solar panel system for your home and how much it can save you over a number of years, but getting one finally installed is a practical thing. If you live in suburbia then getting expert workmen to do the job is rather simple, but if you want a solar power kit for your mountain retreat or cabin by the lake it’s a different matter, you’ll probably want an off-grid solar power kit.

Off-grid solar kits are available on the market at a variety of prices that can suit any pocket but the logistics of installing one in your ‘off-the-beaten-track- residence can be tricky. Therefore, a simple kit that can be assembled quickly and without much confusion is ideal, whether or not it is an expert team carrying out the installation or yourself.

An off-grid solar panel system is one that works completely independently of your regional electricity supply company. While other systems can work in co-operation with the electrical grid (making your home a hybrid home), an off-grid system is the sole provider of electrical power. With that in mind, it is likely that only essential domestic appliances and systems can be run, though a gradual expansion of the solar cell array and its battery bank can serve to provide more power.

It is important that you accurately calculate the energy needs of your home since how large your requirements are will affect the money you spend. For example, a 55W system, which is powerful enough to meet the needs of a small cabin and can produce 1.54kwt per week with 4 hours recharging per day, can set you back around USD900. Meanwhile, a 1440W system, which can run more and larger appliances for a family home, with 40kwt per week with a 4-hour daily recharging window, could cost you just under USD25,000.

A typical off-grid solar power kit will include photovoltaic panels, an inverter, a controller, a mounting/racking system, a combiner box, batteries, cables and wiring and, finally, DC ground fault protector. Sometimes the batteries are not included in the kit, though that’s usually because locally-sourced batteries can be a better option for you.

You can get a cheaper kit, costing as little as USD200, which you can build yourself at home. These kits provide detailed step-by-step instructions on how to build your own solar panel system, and will identify components that are easy to attain and may even be lying around your home already. Be warned however, that the time taken to construct it can run over several days, so you not only need to know what you’re doing but also have time off your normal schedule to do it.

Even if you don’t live half way up a mountain, switching to an off-grid power source still makes sense. It’s a trend that tens of thousands of households around the word are part of and it is growing every year.
