Solar Powered Car Kits – the future starts now

Until about 10 years ago, the idea of a solar powered car driving down the highway still seemed a little futuristic, but today there is nothing very strange about the idea. Most cars that we can buy use solar power to some degree, and solar powered toy cars are everywhere. Now, it’s not difficult to find a solar powered car kit that will allow you to build your own solar car.

In truth, the vast majority of these solar powered car kits are for the construction of toys. Some of these toy cars can be tiny, fitting into the palm of your hand, while others are larger and more robust and can be driven around the garden by remote control, over rocks and through ditches. Both can be great fun, and can be purchased for around USD20.

Hybrid cars can allow a solar panel to be fitted onto the roof to increase the percentage contribution of electrical power to the running of the car. Some hybrids now have as much as 30 miles electrical power, thereby reducing the cost to the environment (and your pocket) impressively.

But there is another option. If you want a car that you can drive to the store in and not have to worry about oil prices, then a solar powered car kit will allow you to build that car at home. These kits can cost as much as USD5,500 with the SUNNev solar car amongst the best on the market.

Everything necessary is provided in the kit, from the solar panels which can sit on the hood of the car, to the frame of the car itself. Its easy-to-follow manual means it can take around 80 hours to construct, and the completed vehicle is fully legal in almost all states of the USA. These are light vehicles, capable to speeds of 25 mph and functional in the simplest way.

Sadly, the technology commercially available today does not allow you to find fully solar powered vehicles that can perform like the gasoline or diesel vehicle that is sitting in your driveway now. So, a solar car will offer low speeds that are fine for going about town and getting home without any fuss.

Solar technology is developing at a fast pace, and there are plenty of examples of solar cars that can provide a sound alternative to the current vehicles available. The World Solar Challenge is a race specifically for solar powered cars that is held in Australia every year, but these cars are generally covered entirely by solar cells and still can only reach speeds of 50 mph.

Perhaps, speeding down the highway in a solar car is still a thing of the future, but for a simple alternative to the fossil fuel-draining vehicles used now, the solar car kits available are just the answer.
