If you are looking to add some charm to your garden path or swimming pool area, then the addition of some solar lights would not fall short of achieving that. Today, you can easily install your new lights with everything you need included in easy-to-assemble solar light kits of varying sizes and costs.
The technology is simple, using a photovoltaic solar panel to charge regular AA sized nickel cadmium or nickel metal halide rechargeable batteries to power the lights at night time. Generally, a fully-charged battery can power a light from between 8 and 12 hours, and should take only one day to be recharged by sunlight.
Solar lights are cost efficient, easy to run and even easier to place in your garden, with some operating independently of one another, meaning you can place them anywhere you want and move them whenever you wish. They can be self-contained and require no more maintenance than cleaning the solar panel regularly to ensure the batteries can be recharged efficiently.
Kits also serve a number of purposes, with those creating simple ambient lighting and those that provide focused critical lighting and non-critical lighting. Critical lighting means the strength of the light from the lamp is higher and is focused directly on a specific area – like security lights. Non-critical lighting refers to strong leading lighting, such as streetlamps and floodlights. Both require high voltage strength to run. Ambient lighting, which provides more gentle, low lights require low voltage strength.
The variety available means that choosing the right solar light kit for you is easy. Lights can be as small as 8 inches in size or as large a full patio light mounted on a lamp post. They can be elaborately designed with bronzed finishing or plainly designed to be subtly hidden along a walkway. Basically, you can have whatever you want for your garden, path, pool area or driveway.
While you can find solar light kits that include lights that have integrated solar panels, allowing you to place them to work independently of one another, there are also those with cables, linking a number of lights to the one solar panel, usually with a 12 Watt power capacity.
A typical light kit will include a number of lights with lawn/ground stakes, a solar panel with between 10 feet and 50 feet of cable (some can be longer), a DC power supply, a stake or mounting bracket for the panel, and of course, a number of rechargeable batteries.
Simply connect (if necessary) the lights to the cable, the batteries to the solar panel and the solar panel in the best position to capture sunlight. Within an hour, you’ll have your kit assembled and lighting the night. And remember, that only a minimal amount of maintenance is required. Just keep the panel clean and check your battery life. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy.
