Solar Cell Kits – Learning solar technology

With all the technology involved in modern living, solar panels and solar power can be lost as simply another of life’s wonders. There is perhaps a temptation to leave the wonder be and not learn about the secrets of solar power. Now, with the benefit of some instruction, you can build your own cells thanks to the growing range of solar cell kits available on the market.

Solar cell kits are perfect if you’re the type of person that prefers to know every aspect of the gadgets and systems installed in your home, and perhaps to build them from scratch. The vast majority of kits on sale are for educational purposes, and are often purchased by students for the classroom or to complete school projects, but all can be built upon to construct a working panel.

The cost of cells is quite small, ranging from as little as USD6 to USD25 or so. Of course, the cells are tiny, measured in millimeters, and are quite fragile. Kits come with everything you need: a small polycrystalline solar cell, DC motor, enough wire for connections, and often with simple extras to drive, like spinning colored cards. Look for the easy-to-use kits which have aspects such as color-coded solder pads designed to make soldering easier.

The cells’ power is low, ranging from 0.45V to 1.0V, which is just about enough to make a small motor run. However, some can achieve 2.3V at 16mA and a collection of cells, properly wired into a working panel, could provide a greater electrical current to power a larger item.

Assembling your own solar cell is not without its intrigue, even for an adult, with even greater detail offered by other kits. Solar cell kits using nanocrystalline dye-sensitized cells are amongst the most fun to assemble, recommending a curious partnership of titanium dioxide glass plates and berries (blackberries, raspberries or pomegranate seeds) to convert sunlight to electricity. The crushed berries or seeds serve to dye the plate, helping to absorb sunlight more efficiently.

The educational benefits of these solar cell kits are huge, with students from even a young age learning of the workings of solar energy. That in turn creates awareness and focus on the future.

But they can also be perfect for an adult with an interest in technology and a hunger for understanding the rapidly changing technologies of the modern world. And, at less than USD30 for even an upmarket kit, this ‘hobby’ is well within everyone’s price range.
