It’s no secret that by removing the cost of installation, you can save a lot of money on your new solar pool heating system. There are two ways of doing this: firstly, by going about the whole thing in the DIY tradition and building your own system pretty much from scratch; and secondly, by purchasing the whole system in an easy-to-assemble kit and simply assembling it yourself.
For most of us, the second option is far more realistic because of, perhaps, our lack of DIY experience and the technological dos and don’ts that are involved in solar energy. A solar pool heating kit is the perfect purchase.
There is a wide variety of solar pool heating kits on the market, though most of them offer pretty much the same product. The difference really lies in the size of the kit that you wish to buy, or even the section of the overall pool water heating system. For example, some kits only offer plumbing components so as to connect the pool pump to a solar collector and then to the pool itself. The water from the pool is pumped through the collector, where it is heated by the power of the sun, and then back into the pool.
It means that you can buy the solar collector kit separately (often for only around $400 to $500), which suits you if the plumbing and pump segments in your existing system are working fine and do not need to be replaced. However, there are complete kits available also.
The reason for the low price is the technology now being used by kit manufacturers. In order to make it more assembler-friendly, the solar collectors are not made like regular solar panels but are mats made of a heavy-duty, long-lasting EPDM rubber. They are far more durable than the ‘delicate’ solar panels we’re used to seeing, and are UV and chlorine resistant.
It is also a simple and inexpensive task to add a further solar collector if necessary, with matching collectors often simply clicking into place alongside an existing one. The size of your pool, of course, has an influence on how many solar collectors you need, with as many as seven required for an outdoor in-ground pool of 12ft x 24ft size.
Despite the clear advantages for your pocket, switching your swimming pool water heating system to a solar powered system can be a large investment. But by cutting out the installation specialists and the labour costs that they will charge, a solar pool heating kit can make the switch all the more affordable.
