Solar pool heating systems – which is for you?

When it comes to swimming pools, the great attraction is the knowledge that on those hot, balmy days there is somewhere to soak in cool water and perhaps even take in the view. It’s a great way to relax and an even better way to ease stress after a hectic day. The key word mentioned of course is cool, since none of us like a pool that is too cold. But in order to achieve that state, the water generally needs a little help in the form of a heating system, and solar pool heating systems are the most cost effective available.

While conventional heating systems, like gas and electrical systems, can heat a pool all year round, the fact remains that the cost of heating such a body of water as that contained in a swimming pool is very high. That is why investing in a solar pool heating system, which can efficiently use the energy from the sun that’s already there, is the wisest one to make.

A typical solar pool heating system will consist of a solar collector (or panel), a filter, a pump and a flow control valve. Water is circulated around the solar collector and heated by the power of the sun, and from there back in the pool – the water’s place of origin. A filter ensures the water entering the collector is free from debris, while the pump powers the circulation system and the flow control valve controls the flow of pool water into the collector.

It all seems very simple, and indeed it isn’t that complicated at all, but there are a number of things that you should know. There are two types of solar collectors – glazed and unglazed – with the expected use of the pool the prime factor in choosing which one is right for you. If you are in a hot climate and can see yourself swimming every day then an unglazed collector is the most cost efficient. Unglazed collectors are not housed in a case, with a glass front, and so reflection and other causes of heat loss are not a problem. They are also the least expensive panels to get and are made of heavy-duty rubber or plastic.

However, if you are located in a more temperate climate and plan to make use of the pool all year round, then glazed collectors are the best option. Because they are sealed within a case behind glass, they can extract heat from sunlight more efficiently than unglazed collectors. However, they are more expensive and are made chiefly of copper tubing on an aluminium plate and placed in the secured case.

It is worth noting that regardless of which type of solar pool heating system you choose, including a pool cover will also help to reduce costs. Evaporation is by far the main culprit when it comes to heat loss and by covering your pool when it’s not in use, you help to maintain temperature and therefore reduce the energy used in heating the water.

With solar pool heating systems costing around $4,000, and a payback term of between 2 and 7 years (depending on the system purchased and climate you’re in) the benefits are clear to see. A well-maintained system can last for 20 years, making your cost savings highly significant in the long run.
