DIY Solar Pool Heating – the best option for your pocket!

There is little doubt that turning to solar energy as the power source for your swimming pool’s water heater is a wise move. Not only does it contribute to the global push towards a greener future, it also helps to reduce your household energy bill. But how can you reduce that burden even further? By turning to DIY solar pool heating the savings can be even more.

Even with the costs that are saved, choosing to have a solar powered water heating system installed to heat your swimming pool is still a major investment. The initial costs involved are similar to those of electric, propane and gas systems, ranging from a modest $2,000 to around $5,000, though more elaborate systems can cost much more. The advantage of the solar pool heater is in the savings after installation, with as much as 60% to 70% of running costs saved, due in the main to the fact that the ‘fuel’ is free – sunlight.

The key to further savings then is by-passing the installation stage and building the system yourself. Of course, this should only be done by someone that has a good understanding of the workings of solar power systems or by a DIY enthusiast who has some experience with solar panels. However, truthfully, the method of constructing your own solar pool heating system is not that difficult to follow at all.

All of the components of the system you’ll construct are easily available in your local hardware store, even a small PV solar panel-powered pump. Unsurprisingly, the most important part of the while system is the solar panel (or collector) that heats the water but this technology is actually not necessary to heat water at all.

Instead, a sufficient length of black garden hose or tubing (800ft-1,000ft depending on the size of your pool), cut and laid in a series of coils can be used. Simply attach the coils to a plywood base, which has been painted black, and place it strategically in the best sunspot in your garden or on a roof. You can use joiners and t-junctions to link the coils and run toward and out of the pool. The system’s pump can be run off electricity (adding to the bill) or powered by a small solar panel, typically costing between just $100 and $150.

With enough coils, the water being pumped through the tubing will be heated greatly, filling your pool with heated water for a fraction of the price of regular powered pool heating systems. Another major advantage, of course, is that the system will shut off and turn on automatically as the sun sets and rises each day. So you can never blame forgetfulness for your high bills again – nor worry at all about them for that matter!
