If you are considering buying a solar water heating system for your pool then you have obviously taken a close look at the costs involved. There is little doubt that there are real advantages to converting to solar power and that solar panels are an efficient way to heat pool water. However, there may be another option that you have overlooked: solar powered pool heating rings.
It may seem strange but you don’t actually have to go to the expense of having a solar panel system, complete with lengthy panels mounted of a roof, a pump and regulator, installed on your property. At a fraction of the cost, you can purchase a sufficient number of solar powered pool heating rings to do the same job. While you may pay around $4,000 for a moderate solar panel system, you can buy solar pool rings individually for around $25 each or in sets of 10 for just over $200. Depending on the size of your pool, you will need five to 15 rings, making the whole investment far more affordable for the majority of us.
But what are solar powered pool heating rings? Well basically, they are inflatable solar panels that float on the water in your pool and heat them directly. They are made of two sheets of UV resistant vinyl, the first layer clear and the second layer coloured blue. The blue layer absorbs and converts about 50% of the sunlight it receives to heat, while the top layer acts as an insulator thereby reducing heat loss in evening and at night time. The second 50% of sunlight is allowed through to the water itself, allowing deep water heating to take place.
Each ring has a magnetic edge that ensures they stick together in the water. Water is left exposed through the triangular spaces between every three rings but the rings are designed so to prevent the development of yellow algae.
Amazingly, despite their simple appearance and low cost, each ring can produce 21,000 BTUs (British Thermal Units) of energy per day, which is just as much as a solar panel can produce. The result is that even with the savings in running costs that a solar powered heating system can make over gas or electrical heaters, the solar pool rings slash that figure by as much as 75%.
For the maximum efficiency, the solar rings should cover 70%-80% of the pool and safety is a key element of the design. The rings can easily break apart when someone or something falls in, thereby removing the hazard of entrapment, which exists with one-piece pool covers.
Altogether, for price, cost efficiency and safety it’s well worth keeping in mind a solar powered pool heating ring when considering your pool heating options. It can save a headache in installation and in costs!
